Obituary

James Toliver Kinney , son of the late John Williard and Lela Mae Kinney was born on September 19, 1941 in Little Rock, South Carolina.  He departed this earthly life on Wednesday, April 4, 2018 in Monmouth, New Jersey.

Toliver received his formal education from the Latta Schools, Latta, South Carolina.  After graduating from Latimer High School, he moved to New Jersey in 1960; residing with one of his siblings to prepare for the arrival of his family, where he became an Entrepreneur. Toliver was the manager at Tip Top Brush & Roller Company from 1961-1964.  Then he proceeded onto Puerto Rican forwarding/Sea Land as a long shoreman in Port Newark, Elizabeth, New Jersey. With further advancement no longer possible Toliver left in 1972 starting his own business in partnership with Taft Fore (brother-n-law) opening up T&T Food Market on Clinton Avenue in Newark, New Jersey. Toliver bought Taft out after one year in 1973. Toliver soared off into his own business creating his own homemade sausage becoming one of the most successful business men in the city of Newark, New Jersey, known to many as the "Sausage Man." Toliver opened Multiple stores as well as his own Getty Gas Station, marketing the Kinney name.  Kinney's Southern Brand Sausages was patent in 1980 his sausage was sold to Pathmark and Food; town stores in the metropolitan area; as well as the mom and pop stores throughout the Newark, East Orange and Jersey City areas not to mention all of Perkin Restaurants and Atlantic City Casinos. Toliver provided many jobs throughout the community of Newark and Jersey City as well as providing jobs for his family.  In 1985 Toliver decided to retire and travel the world and enjoy life. Relocating back to Latta, South Carolina Toliver married his long time friend: Ruthie Tyler in 1994 starting a new beginning. Couldn't sit still long, Toliver took on a logistic job in 2008, driving clients to their doctors appointments all throughout the Carolinas he continued until 2013. Toliver life was drastically changed at this point being diagnosed with Alzheimer. Toliver battled this condition until April 2018 with the support of his loving wife: Ruthie, Debra, Tenicka and Tamara. After twenty-five years of leaving Latta, South Carolina, Toliver and Ruthie rekindled their friendship.  In 1993, they both returned to Columbia, South Carolina. After a courtship, they married in May 1994 in Latta, South Carolina.  Upon marrying, they joined New Hope Baptist Church where they continued their walk with the Lord. At New Hope, Toliver was a member of the following auxiliaries: Trustee Board, Usher Board, Senior Choir and Missionary Society.  He volunteered at the After-School Program at the Church. Toliver will forever be remembered for his big smile and his fashion, especially his hats.

Toliver was preceded in death by his father and mother, John Williard and Lela Mae Kinney; two sisters: Miriam Louise Kinney and Elizabeth Lorrine Strong; one brother: William C. "Ricky" Kinney.

Toliver leaves to cherish his fond and loving memories ~ his devoted and lovely wife: Ruthie Tyler Kinney; one daughter: Deborah (Christopher) Champ of Sommerset, NJ; two sons: Toliver "Toddy" Kinney of Newark, NJ and Jason J. Kinney of Orangeburg, SC; three step-daughters: Rebecca Bellamy of Mount Pocono, PA, Tamara Tyler (Solomon) Jackson and Tanecika Tyler of Brooklyn, NY; one step-son: Lawrence Tyler of Brooklyn, NY; step-mother: Eldora Kinney of Latta, SC; mother-n-law: Mabel Graham; five sisters: Naomi Porchia of Houston, TX, Emma Ruth (Bobby) Willis, Mary Frances (James) Strong and Gloria Ann (Ronald) Kirkland all of Orangeburg, SC and  Eldora Janette (Laval) Williams of Florence, SC; five brothers: John Willard (Mary Jane) Kinney of Winston Salem, NC, Lee Frank (Hazel) Kinney of Columbia, SC, Arnold (Mary) Kinney, Lashan (Cassie) Kinney of Latta, SC and Charles Arthur (Felicia) Kinney of Dunn, NC; one sister-n-law: Rose (Dupree) Moore of Brooklyn, NY; three brothers-n-law: Willie (Barbara) Graham of Vachville, CA, James (Hazel) Moultrie of Dillon, SC and James M. Brown of Latta, SC; fourteen grandchildren, four great grandchildren and a host of nieces, nephews, other relatives and friends.
