Dorthy Mae James was born on April 15, 1950 in Fork, South Carolina to the late Randolph and Annie Green James. After her mother died when she was only two years old, she was morthered by her many aunts in South Carolin and in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania whom she cherished dearly.

After her father relocated his family to New Jersey, Dorthy attended the public schools and graduated from Dickerson High School in Jersey City, New Jersey. She gave birth to her first son, Michael in 1969. She would later study at Jersey City State College while assisting her father and brothers in the family business, Mack Trailer Repair, Inc. In 1981 her second son, Allen was born.

Dorthy's love for her sons and eagerness to learn her family history soon led her to re-visit the South as a permanent home. She moved first to Whiteville, North Carolina, then Hamer, South Carolina and finally back to Latta, South Carolina. She found work as a court researcher and enrolled at Florence-Darlington Technical College, Florence, South Carolian graduating with an Associate Degree in Business Accounting in 1997. She later adopted her sister's youngest daughter, Elizabeth.

In her later years, Dorthy found a church home at Berean Church of Christ in Latta, South Carolina. Sister Dorthy was an inspirational part if the Berean Church, where she served as a member if the Mother's Board and the Missionary Department. She would lead worship when the Praise Team was absent. Sis. James was Berean's connection to traditional hymns and old gospel songs. The erean Church family could not close worship service without her soul stirring songs of praise.

Dorthy leaves to cherish her loving memories ~ two sons: Michael Cory (Michelle) James and Allen James; a special niece: Elizabeth James; her cherished granddaughter: Jasmine Moore; two grandsons: Michael Cory James, Jr. and De'Aundre De'Angelo James; two step-grandsons: Quantay Lashawn Abram and Maurice Montrell Williams, Jr.; sisters: Joyce Quintella Bethea, Shirley Darlene Rodgers Bradley, Valarie K. James and Donna Campbell; brothers: Bill (Sharon) Nelson, William Green, Herbert (Naomi) James, Albert (Donna) James, Randolph (Geraldine) James, Jr., Cecil James (Mary- deceased), Eric James (Cozette), Randolph Gregory James, Kenneth James, Steven James, and Timothy James; aunts and uncles: Ida Mae Green (Elijah-deceased), Ida Green Stevens(George-deceased), Nathan (Helen) Green; a special friend: Elder Viola Johnson and a host of nieces, nephews, other relatives and friends.

She was preceded in death by ~ her parents; and infant son: Marcus Julius James; four sisters: Dora (Clyde) Alexander, Deniece James (infant), Gardenia Rogers, Angela James (Darrick) McKenzie; two brothers: Matthew James and Jerome James.
